Adapted from the article, "Mondioring, taking North America by Storm" by Bob Billyard:

"..Now comes Mondioring (Worldring), an F.C.I.-recognized international protection sport that endeavors to blend the best of the protection dog sports.

There are obstacles and accessories that the decoy can use to impress the dog. The dog could be required to go through water to the bite, whether it’s a water trough or water thrown at him.

The Defense of Handler exercise is not a standard routine. It is left to  the imaginations of the decoys and judge, and  tests the dog’s adaptaability, self-control, and thought processes.

The object guard involves accessories, two decoys and many different types of objects to be

guarded. The dog could be guarding a chair, wagon, baby carriage, garbage can. The type of accessories, retrieve objects, object to be guarded and the order of the flee attack (whether a stopped or bite), etc. are unknown to the handler till the day of the trial. This eliminates a lot of pattern training and relies much more on how you prepare your dog in his ability to think, adjust and react. The dog must also adapt to its environment. Every trial will look different to the dog. There could be music playing, fake decoys, civilians, anything on the field that brings it more to real life. Your imagination is your only limit.

Defense of Handler - (30 pts I, II, III)

In my opinion this is the signature exercise of Mondioring. The dog must employ excellent self control, decision making,  and adaptability to succeed in this exercise.

The exercise is based around the theme of the trial and usually uses two decoys. Because the scenarios are different for every trial, it is difficult to explain exactly what might take place. A very basic explanation is that distractions usually  take place before the handshake. Efforts will be made to entice the dog to bite the wrong decoy. You might have to perform certain tasks during the exercise, such as placing objects in a wagon given to you by one of the decoys. Music could be playing. You might be sitting in a chair when attacked by the decoy.

Some basic rules  must be followed. The decoy who eventually shakes the handler's hand is the decoy who must attack the handler. The decoy must hold his attack for two seconds minimum to allow the dog to bite. It must be with two hands, and clear and unambiguous. There is a 10-second bite with out and guard. This exercise is a joy to train and training never ends.

In the Defense of Handler exercise, the handler is only allowed to give the dog a command at the start line, where the exercise begins.  Any command after that

point will disqualify the exercise.  The dog is expected to remain with the handler, no matter what happens.  Handler could walk from one point to another.  Or sit in a chair and then move on.  Or climb steps, lay on a stretcher, be handed objects, have to bend over and collect objects, push a wheelbarrow, sit at a restaurant table, or any variation that the judge comes up with. No repeated command may be given to assist
the dog in staying with handler.  This is the challenge, along with the challenge for the dog of deciding when it may bite.

The photos here demonstrate the variations that may exist in the Defense of Handler exercise in a trial.  A Mondioring trial consists of three areas.  Obedience, agility exercises (jumps), and protection exercises.  All are completed with no interruption, in that dog and handler stay on the field to complete all exercises.  A Mondioring III routine will last approximately 45 minutes.
